The NVQ is the final step to becoming an electrician. You will be demonstrating the skills you have learnt during your Diploma training to build up a portfolio of evidence in the workplace.
How is the NVQ achieved?
The NVQ level 3 is not a training course; it is an assessment of your competence and is mandatory for those who require JIB Gold Card status. The NVQ is relatively easy to achieve as long as you are working within the electrical industry and have access to the right kind of work. Achievement of the C&G NVQ Level 3 in full is based upon existing qualifications, site/work-based assessments of competence and AM2 (booked separately).
The first step is to undertake a profiling session with your Electrical NVQ Assessor where the process for achieving an NVQ will be explained in detail. Moving forward and to achieve the NVQ, the evidence will need to include:
- Photographic evidence of the work being undertaken (not just finished work).
- Written evidence of what you are doing on site and how you are covering the various unit criteria.
- Document evidence including risk assessments, method statements, any other H&S information, test documentation, material schedules, permits, delivery notes, specifications, drawings, plans, diagrams and manufacturer’s instructions.
- Expert witness testimonies, someone ideally in a supervisory or management position, confirming the work completed and able to provide witness statements.
- Site Assessments, undertaken using remote video conferencing systems which will allow:
– Remote site observations to be arranged at short notice.
– Remote site observations can be taken at any time of your working hours, even at weekends or in the evenings.
– Remote site observations allows your witnesses to join the video-conference via their mobile phone, tablet and / or PC so they do not need to be with you at the time of your assessment.
– Remote site observations allow the assessor to speak with your supervisor and / or site manager to verify the work you have covered and provide act as witness to your competency.
What kind of work is required for my portfolio?
The C&G 2357 NVQ requires that you can demonstrate and provide evidence installing a range of containment, equipment and wiring systems. At the very least for the containment, you need the following:
- Steel conduit
- PVC conduit
- steel trunking
- PVC trunking and tray
- Flex
- Singles
- SWA
- FP200
- and
- T&E for the wiring systems.
As well as a range of different types of equipment, distribution boards, isolators, sockets, switches, control systems and auxiliary equipment.
The final step:
To achieve the NVQ (C&G 2357) in full, the final step is to undertake AM2 (Assessment Measurement) and dependent upon the qualifications you already hold, completion of a Bridging Unit may also be necessary. Please ask for guidance on this when you call or visit us.
AM2:
The AM2 assessment (booked separately) is a mandatory unit within this qualification and can be completed at a dedicated AM2 centre of your choice depending on where you are based in the UK. The test is an industry recognised trade test that is controlled by National Electrotechnical Training (NET), a registered UK charity that owns, manages and develops End Point Assessments and Assessments of Occupational Competence for the electrotechnical industry.
The AM2 is a two to three day assessment and candidates will be expected to install, terminate, connect, inspect, test, commission and diagnose faults in accordance with the installation specification provided by the assessor and in accordance with the relevant statutory and non-statutory regulations on the following:
- Lighting and power circuits
- A three-phase distribution board and sub circuit
- A central heating/sustainable energy system
- A safety services circuit and device
- A data cabling system
Completing this NVQ, including the AM2 assessment will allow you to be recognised in the electrical industry as a qualified electrician and will allow you to register with a competent person scheme such as NICEIC or NAPIT and will enable you to meet the pre-requisites for many popular qualifications, such as: Electric Vehicle Charge Point Installer and Solar PV and Battery Storage.
This programme is an assessment of competence for those who have completed their Electrical Installation Diplomas.
The AM2 assessment is not included. We will help you arrange your AM2 by putting you in touch with your local AM2 assessment centre, the AM2 assessment will be an additional cost and we do provide preparation training for the AM2 Assessment if required.
How is the qualification assessed?
The assessment involves building up a portfolio of evidence from the work place.
We run our Diploma and NVQ qualifications at evenings and weekends and most of your evidence can be uploaded via our online portal.
Onsite assessment is required for the NVQ.
Please contact us to discuss your requirements and funding options for our Electrical Diplomas and NVQ options.
