Course Levels and Structure
Our ESOL classes cater to all levels, including Pre-Entry, Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1, and Level 2. Courses focus on key areas of language learning:

  • Speaking & Listening: Develop your ability to communicate confidently in English. Lessons emphasize grammar, vocabulary, and real-life conversational skills based on the ESOL Skills for Life Core Curriculum. Learners take the NOCN Skills for Life Speaking and Listening exam.
  • Reading: Strengthen reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary to enhance understanding of written English. Learners sit the NOCN Skills for Life Reading exam.
  • Writing: Improve your ability to write effectively in English, with a focus on grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. This course prepares learners for the NOCN Skills for Life Writing exam.
  • Functional Skills in Maths and IT for ESOL Learners: Build essential numeracy and digital skills to support everyday life and work. Learners can progress to sit Functional Skills exams.
  • Pre-Entry Course: Designed for beginners with minimal literacy skills, this course helps learners build foundational English skills and prepares them to progress to Entry Level 1.
  • Bridging Classes: These courses help learners transition between levels, focusing on vocabulary development, literacy improvement, and confidence in communication.

Entry Requirements
No formal qualifications are required to enroll. Upon entry, you will be assessed to ensure placement at the appropriate level. If you’ve studied ESOL before, please bring any previous certificates to the assessment.

  • Proof of identity, such as a passport, Home Office documentation, or ID card.
  • Evidence of any benefits received within the last six months to determine eligibility for subsidized fees (if applicable).

ESOL Levels Explained at Activate Skills Training

Pre-entry Level

Develop basic skills to speak, read, and write in English. Gain confidence in understanding and using simple language for everyday needs.

Entry Level One

Build essential vocabulary and use simple grammar to help with daily interactions, such as asking and answering basic questions, seeking travel information, booking appointments with a doctor, and requesting medication at a pharmacy.

Entry Level Two

Learn to express feelings, wishes, and interests with greater confidence. Develop skills to read and write formal letters, create a CV, complete job applications, and provide and request information about employment opportunities.

Entry Level Three

Communicate fluently on familiar topics while identifying and self-correcting mistakes. Gain the ability to read and write longer, formal texts like reports, personal statements, and letters. Read and understand simple newspaper articles and other written materials.

Level One

Engage confidently in both workplace and everyday conversations using a broader range of vocabulary. Develop presentation and public speaking skills, as well as improve pronunciation.

Level Two

Focus on specialized vocabulary tailored to specific job roles. Hone grammar and pronunciation in more complex everyday and professional contexts.

ESOL for Beginners

Start speaking, reading, and writing English while developing your understanding of simple language and numbers. Learn essential phrases for navigating daily life, such as travel inquiries, making appointments, and purchasing medication.

ESOL Intermediate

Strengthen your fluency in discussing familiar topics, identifying and correcting mistakes. Build skills in formal writing, such as letters and reports, and confidently read newspaper articles.

ESOL High Level

To qualify for free courses, you must be a UK or EEA national with pre-settled or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme and have resided in the UK/EEA for the past three years. Proof of eligibility may be required at enrolment.
