Overview (one-day) This intensive, practical one-day course gives candidates a solid, workplace-ready introduction to domestic plumbing and central heating fundamentals. It covers cold water and hot water systems, central heating components and basic commissioning, hands-on plumbing skills (copper pipe bending, jointing and working with common fittings), and a clear, accessible introduction to heat pumps and renewable heating technologies. The course is designed as the entry gateway for candidates who will go on to our heat-pump training packages — completion of this one-day course makes a candidate eligible for the full heat pump programmes we deliver.
Who this course is for / entry requirements
Job seekers, career changers and tradespeople wishing to expand into plumbing, domestic heating and renewables.
No formal qualifications required; a reasonable standard of English and basic numeracy is helpful.
Suitable for people aiming to progress to our heat-pump installer courses and domestic electrical/Part P progression routes.
Learning outcomes (what delegates will be able to do)
By the end of the day participants will be able to:
Describe the basic components and operation of domestic cold-water and hot-water systems.
Identify the main parts of a central heating system (boiler, pump, expansion vessel, radiator, TRV, cylinder, controls).
Safely prepare, measure, cut and bend copper pipe to produce common domestic plumbing runs.
Fit and test common types of fittings (compression, push-fit, and an overview of soldered joints) and select the right fitting for the job.
Understand safe filling, venting and basic commissioning of a heating circuit and how to check system pressure.
Explain the basic principles of heat pumps (air-source and ground-source), their role in domestic heating, and how they interface with hot water cylinders and central heating systems.
Understand health & safety essentials, PPE and safe working practices in domestic plumbing and heating environments.
Continuous practical observation and trainer competency sign-off.
Short knowledge check (multiple choice / short answer) to confirm understanding.
Delegates receive a Certificate of Attendance / CPD Certificate (approx. 6.5–7 CPD hours) and a record of practical competencies achieved.
Successful completion qualifies candidates to enrol on our heat pump training packages (eligibility requirement).
Equipment, tools & PPE (provided / required)
Provided by the centre: common hand tools for learners to use, pipe benders, practice rigs, radiators and demo cylinders, materials for practical exercises, and training aids. Learners should bring / wear: sturdy workwear (long trousers), steel-toe or protective footwear, notepad, pen. (Trainers will confirm any additional PPE requirements before the course.)
Class size & delivery
Maximum: 8 learners per course to ensure meaningful hands-on practice and individual feedback.
Typical delivery: 1 lead trainer + assistant for larger groups.
Teaching methods: brief theory sessions, live demonstrations, supervised hands-on practice, group troubleshooting and bite-size assessments.
Progression & how this supports employability
Eligibility: Completion makes candidates eligible for our full heat-pump courses and packages (ASHP/GSHP introduction, installer training, commissioning workshops).
Immediate employment benefits: demonstrates basic competence and practical skills that employers value for entry-level plumbing/heating assistant roles; boosts confidence to apply for trainee installer and labourer roles on domestic jobs.
Pathways: Progress to Level 2 Electrical or Part P awareness, heat pump installer training, plumbing apprenticeships, or direct employer placements/assisted interviews where available.
